Committee Description

[United Nations Environment Programme]

Committee Topic

The Dais

Upon the recommendation of the UN Stockholm conference on the Human Environment, resolution 2997 of 1972, established UNEP. The UN was beginning to witness an alignment of worldwide environmental cooperation and treaty signing. The UNEP’s primary responsibility is to offer policy guidance and coordination of environmental programmes inside the various branches of the UN. UNEP also promotes international cooperation on environmental troubles and via its medical advisory corporations, it encourages the international community to participate in formulating coverage for a few of the UN’s environmental initiatives so to enforce the regulations to hit its goals. UNEP offers the technical help for a ramification of international conventions, and also monitors the implementation of the selections, and presents facts and records to the public. The UNEP’s headquarters is situated in Nairobi, Kenya, where the organization has endorsed participation by the private sector to sell the sustainable use of the areas’ natural resources.

This committee is an expert group analysis on actions for SDG 13. As a committee

you will be looking to identify triumphs of action towards this goal for 2030. This conference will be seeking coordinated commitments on new climate change solutions that take into consideration various scientific evidence that have highlighted the misunderstandings held regarding the length of time the planet has to take action. These findings are found most conclusively within the IPCC report entitled “Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 °C

Key findings of interest for this committee will include a plan of hope for how the planet can limit the rise of global temperature above 1.5°C if “rapid and far-reaching transitions in energy, land, urban and infrastructure..., and industrial systems” are met. There is also the requirement that CO2 emissions be reduced by 45% by 2030 (from 2010 levels) and reach net zero levels by 2050. Similar reductions will be required for non-CO2 emissions.

A resolution should focus on these key issues and determining a commitment to those most affected by climate change before further damage is felt.
